AUS wins Environmental Public Speaking Competition
A team from American University of Sharjah (AUS) won first place at the 18th Inter-College Environmental Public Speaking Competition, organized by the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG). The competition is an opportunity for undergraduate students, regionally and internationally, to use their public speaking skills to express their opinion on sustainability issues and provide solutions.
The AUS team of five undergraduate students placed first for the topic “Impact of the Fashion and Make-Up Industry on the Environment.” The winning team included biology, chemistry and environmental sciences students Marwa Al Janahi, Abdullah Al Janaahi, Shanelle D’sa, Abdulrahman Al Janaahi; and engineering student Maryam Bin Hammad.
“Participation in such competitions is very important as it helps the students to present their research and opinion on environmentally related issues, and to learn from others,” said Mohammed Abouleish, Associate Professor of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences. “Such an event will increase the knowledge of the students and help them identify opportunities for contributing to a more sustainable environment. Our students are always interested in participating in activities that are related to the environment, to share their research and opinion on related fields and to help in increasing environmental awareness.”
The competition was initiated in 2001 and is judged by a panel of environmental experts.
