CEN hosts seminar on careers in sustainability
In an initiative to inspire the next generation to be part of the change they want to see in the world, the American University of Sharjah (AUS) College of Engineering hosted a Careers in Sustainability Seminar to introduce students to diverse career opportunities within the fields of sustainability.
Organized in collaboration with the AUS Women in Engineering Committee, the seminar delved deeper into the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and reflected on the UAE's vision to diversify and enhance the quality of its labor market by encouraging youth to pursue careers in sustainability, leading to green jobs and a greener economy.
The event kicked off with AUS faculty from the Women in Engineering Committee showcasing their diverse research in sustainability across different disciplines including, chemical, industrial and computer science and engineering.
Moderated by Maha Al Shehhi and Sara Almazmi, members of the Sustainable
Development Youth Council in the UAE, and featuring Amal Al Ahmadi, Head of Research and Development in the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, and Mayyas Al Salman, an AUS alumna and Senior Low Voltage Solar Design Engineer at Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), the seminar focused on guiding career choices and advancing the SDGs.
“We want to assist university students in making informed decisions about their university degrees and programs by showcasing various careers in sustainability. The seminar was an opportunity to provide them with firsthand insights that could inspire them to choose paths that align with their passion for sustainability and contribute positively to the environment. We want to get students excited about making sustainability a central part of their education and future careers. By fostering a new wave of enthusiastic sustainability champions, we can speed up our efforts in reaching the SDGs both locally and worldwide,” said Dr. Vian Ahmad, Professor in Industrial Engineering and event coordinator.
