Journey of AUS architecture alumnus combines artistic expression, regional influence and holistic design
Delving into the intricate relationship between human and nature, American University of Sharjah (AUS) alumnus Marwan Ali received special mention in the Student of the Year category at the Architizer’s Vision Award 2023 for his exploration of the idea of a mediator between man and earth, drawing inspiration from historical practices that deliberately carve into the earth to unveil its story with every new layer.
The Architizer's Vision Awards is dedicated to talented studios and individuals who enable the world to envision amazing architecture through photography, drawings, renderings, video and more.
In his project “The Third Landscape,” Ali introduces the concept of a robotic arm made of recycled steel as a tool that takes away from the earth, revealing more data about it with every excavation. Guided by factors such as crop type, quantity, sunlight exposure and landscape typology, the excavating arm establishes a balanced and efficient approach for cultivating the land. Ali completed his project under the guidance of George Katodrytis, Professor in Architecture at the College of Architecture, Arts and Design (CAAD).
Having graduated in 2022 with a Bachelor of Architecture, Ali’s career has flourished, working with architecture firms in Dubai that prioritize design excellence, sustainability and cultural integration. He has contributed to various projects in the Middle East such as EXPO Valley, MISK, Yas Island and City Walk. He also participated in the Jameel Youth Assembly of 2023, which is an annual talent development programme designed to support young artistic leadership in the UAE.
“As an architect, my interests converge on a path that combines artistic expression with regional relevance. I have a profound fascination with drawing and mapping, viewing them not just as tools but as the soul of architectural communication. These practices enable me to convey the intricate layers of my designs, bridging the conceptual with the tangible. I am also deeply rooted in the Middle East and captivated by the cultural evolution of architecture. This region boasts a rich architectural heritage that has been shaped by centuries of history. It serves as both a source of inspiration and a guide for my work, where I strive to blend tradition with modernity,” he said.
Ali’s architectural practice in Dubai is heavily influenced by his time at AUS, which he said had “profoundly enriched his personal and professional journeys.”
“AUS' comprehensive curriculum and design mentorship equipped me with a robust architectural foundation, instilling in me the confidence to confront intricate design challenges. The AUS community, including its faculty and expansive network, have also been a guiding presence throughout my career, nurturing a mindset of continuous learning and innovative problem-solving. I have nothing but thanks and gratitude to all the professors I had during my education at CAAD. The college played an instrumental role in my personal and professional growth, providing me with the knowledge and connections needed to navigate in the field of architecture,” he said.
Currently working as a designer, Ali noted that he is excited to be part of the architecture and design landscape of Dubai in light of what the city has to offer in rapid development and innovation.
“There are amazing opportunities to engage in projects that push the boundaries of architectural design and embrace cutting-edge technologies. It's a dynamic environment where humility, creativity and collaboration are essential as we work to shape not only the physical skyline but also contribute to the cultural and economic growth of the region. This journey is a humbling one as we strive to create spaces that inspire and align with Dubai's forward-looking vision for the future,” he said.
