CAAD architects’ designs for Ajman Library make waves globally
American University of Sharjah (AUS) architecture students Hend Ali Alshehhi and Rawan Ahmed Khedr, designed an individual project for a new Library in Ajman for their ARC 301 Studio course in Fall 2023. Their innovative designs earned international acclaim at the World Architecture Awards for their potential to enrich communities and inspire lives.
Drawing inspiration from the Arabic word "إقرأ" which translates to read in English, Al Shehhi crafted a space that embodies the essence of learning and exploration.
“Libraries possess a significant role in our lives and could be designed as an element of architecture that embraces the symbol of education,” said Al Shehhi. Her design features two main volumes with a central round element, symbolizing unity and inviting exploration. She elaborated: "The library maintains a balance of all conditions, a place that accommodates the beauty of focused education, and a place that invites unity to the community."
In another distinct approach, Khedr's project focused on inclusivity and community engagement, with a vision for adaptable spaces and amenities catering to diverse needs.
“Given the library's location in Ajman, surrounded by residential, cultural and historical areas, I aimed to design a space that acts as an educational resource and a community gathering space. The design consists of two elements: mass and volume, which organize the programs within," Khedr said.
Her design emphasizes knowledge and education for people of all ages, as well as spaces for community events and workshops.
"The design is mindful of the diverse needs of the community and incorporates accessibility features throughout the library. Thus, the library became a beacon of enlightenment in the academic landscape, a haven where the pursuit of knowledge and community is welcomed and encouraged," she said.
Al Shehhi and Khedr worked under the mentorship of AUS faculty members from the Department of Architecture, Dr. Roberto Castillo and Professor Eirik Heintz.
“Alshehhi's design for the Library in Ajman reflects her dedication to research about multi-sensorial architecture. She went beyond the project's requirements to implement a complex design, responding simultaneously to functional and cultural variables, paying careful attention to the needs of diverse users and enhancing the public spaces in the heritage area of Ajman. This award truly recognizes Alshehhi's hard work and commitment to her Architectural education,” said. Dr. Castillo.
Professor Heintz praised Khedr's transformative approach: “Her focus on inclusivity and community engagement has transformed the concept of the Ajman Library into a vibrant hub for learning and collaboration. Her commitment to addressing diverse needs and fostering a sense of belonging is evident in every aspect of her design. It's a privilege to mentor such a talented and compassionate student.”
